This P01 program consists of five (5) research projects, #1: Biodemographic Effects of Social Evolution in the Honey Bee, #2: Aging in the Wild-Medflies and Nematodes, #3: The Mathematical Demography of Biodemography, #4: Biodemography of Intergenerational Transfer, and #5: Evolutionary Dynamics of Life Span. The program will bring experimental techniques, biological systems, demographic concepts, statistical methods, and theoretical models to bear on questions concerning the determinants of life span in both humans and in non-human model systems including both vertebrates and invertebrates. The five research projects are organized around the following cross-cutting themes: Life span is adaptive and shaped by nature; Individuals age in the wild; Sociality and life span are mutually affecting and; Super arching principles provide all-embracing order to variation in animal life spans.

Submtited May, 2008, the P01 Renewal Resubmission expands the work performed in years 2003-2008 and involves twenty-one (21) researchers and fifteen (15) participating institutions from across the United States, the United Kingdom, Greece, the Netherlands, and Japan. This collective expertise – from a dozen difference scientific disciplines – demography, mathematics, and economics to molecular biology, ecology, and entomology. Additional information and details about the following proposed projects, Renewal/Proposed Projects 2009-2014 as part of the Renewal-Resubmission (for the proposed performance period of 2009-2014) will be forthcoming.
